Workshop using theater to combat Food Insecurity and Climate Change in the North West Region.

We hosted an impactful workshop focused on food insecurity in the crisis-affected North West region of Cameroon. This event brought together approximately 50 passionate climate change enthusiasts to engage in critical discussions about the effects of climate change and armed conflict on food security in the region. The workshop aimed to raise awareness and develop actionable solutions to combat food insecurity exacerbated by environmental and social challenges.

The Need for the Workshop

Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in the North West region of Cameroon, where ongoing armed conflict and climate change have significantly disrupted agricultural activities and livelihoods. Many communities rely on subsistence farming, but the dual pressures of environmental degradation and violence have led to decreased agricultural productivity and access to food.

Recognizing the urgent need to address these challenges, the workshop was designed to bring together stakeholders, activists, and enthusiasts who are committed to finding solutions. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, the event aimed to generate innovative ideas and strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change and conflict on food security.

The workshop featured a series of presentations and discussions led by experts in climate science, agriculture, and conflict resolution. Participants delved into the complexities of food insecurity, examining how climate change impacts agricultural practices, soil health, and water availability. Additionally, discussions highlighted how armed conflict disrupts food supply chains, displaces communities, and exacerbates hunger and malnutrition.

One of the key takeaways was the critical intersection between climate change and conflict. Participants learned that extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, not only threaten crop yields but also heighten tensions in communities already struggling with resource scarcity. The dialogue emphasized the need for integrated approaches that address both environmental and social factors contributing to food insecurity.

Collaborative Solutions

A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to collaborative brainstorming sessions, where participants were encouraged to share their insights and propose solutions. Groups discussed a variety of strategies, including:
